Frequently Asked Questions
The questions that come up most often, answered as directly as we know how.
Do I need a permit to elope at Mt. Baker?
No, for groups under 75 people in Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. The Special Use Permit threshold is 75 people, which makes most elopements and micro weddings permit-free. Confirm current requirements with the forest service office before your date. You do need a Northwest Forest Pass for parking at most trailheads.
Is Mt. Baker part of North Cascades National Park?
No. Mt. Baker is part of Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, which is a separate jurisdiction from North Cascades National Park. They are adjacent but governed by entirely different agencies with different permit requirements. The national forest is significantly less restrictive for elopements than the national park.
When is Artist Point accessible by car?
The final 2.7 miles of the Mt. Baker Highway to Artist Point typically open in mid-July and close in late October or early November, depending on snowpack. The lower highway, including Picture Lake and the Heather Meadows visitor area, is accessible year-round from the ski area road. The exact opening and closing dates vary annually.
Can we elope in winter?
Yes. Winter elopements at Mt. Baker are fully possible and produce extraordinary photographs. Artist Point by snowshoe in winter requires a 2.7-mile approach. Picture Lake, Bagley Lakes, and the Heather Meadows areas are accessible from the lower road year-round. Mt. Baker Ski Area provides an exceptional parallel activity for winter wedding weekends.
Can we bring our dog?
Yes, with restrictions. Dogs are allowed in Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest on a 6-foot leash in developed areas and interpretive trails. In backcountry and wilderness areas, requirements vary by trail. Check specific trail requirements before bringing your dog, and designate someone to manage the dog during the ceremony itself.
How do we get a Washington State marriage license?
Whatcom County processes marriage licenses online. There is a three-day waiting period after issuance. No residency requirement. Two witnesses required. The license is valid for 60 days and can be used anywhere in the state.
What is the best time of day for an Artist Point ceremony?
Sunrise and late afternoon are consistently recommended by photographers who work here regularly. Sunrise offers the best light and the fewest crowds. Late afternoon golden hour produces warm light on Shuksan and Baker. Midday in summer is the most crowded time at Artist Point and often the least favorable for photography.
What happens if it rains?
Plan for it regardless of the forecast. Rain at Mt. Baker is always possible and is often beautiful. A misty ceremony in the hemlocks or at Artist Point in fog has a quality that clear-sky days cannot replicate. Your photographer will know how to work with it. Build weather contingency into your plan and communicate it to your guests.
How far is Mt. Baker from Seattle?
Approximately 90 to 100 miles from Seattle, roughly two to two and a half hours by car depending on traffic. Bellingham is the closest city, approximately one hour west of Glacier. Vancouver, British Columbia is ninety minutes northwest.
